The Help and Alice I Have Been

I know I know! We've been very bad bloggers! There is so much going on in our lives. After over a year of looking, I finally got a new job, and I've been acclimating to that for the last month and a half.
I haven't posted my favorite quotes from our Book Club books like I usually do for the last 2 books we've read. So here they are:

Our March/April book was The Help by Katherine Stockett. Everyone really enjoyed that book. Again, it was a book that I likely wouldn't have picked up on my own, and that's what makes book club so great.
My favorite quote from The Help:

Memphis Minny get to singing on the radio how lean meat won't fry, which is about how the love don't last. Time to time, I think I might find myself another man, one from my church. Problem is, much as I love the Lord, church-going man never do all that much for me. Kind a man I like ain't the kind that stays around when he done spending all you money.

Our April/May book was Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin. Again, everyone liked this book too. It's a historical fiction about the girl about whom the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was written. My two favorite quotes from that book are:

...all his smiles were just a little sad around the edges, as if he knew happiness never could last very long. Whenever he smiled, I wanted to pat his hand or lean my head against his shoulder to cheer him up.

...they had no idea that the sun had just fallen from the sky. For while I had known I would never see [him] again, still I rose every morning taking comfort that he was in the world, awakening to the same rosy dawn, sleeping under the same night sky. We rarely corresponded, and when we did it was always extremely polite and impersonal; but I felt as if he was in my life, and I in his. I felt it because I knew, when I looked at a painting, read a book, observed a rare bird or delicate flower, that he would have looked at it in exactly the way I did; our hearts, our minds, were so sympathetic. So that merely by going on and enjoying life, I was sharing it with him.

Our next book is Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Check out our cool GoodReads widget in our sidebar to see a list of the book club books.

Now that we have the ball rolling again, you can expect more posts shortly. :)
